As parents and carers, we often talk about transition points for children. Moving into the Senior years at school or becoming a boarder for the first time is one of these key transition points. Managing transition points independently of each other can give young people the opportunity to navigate these challenges at a pace that suits them.
At Scots, Boarding is an integral part of life at the College and we are privileged to welcome young men from around Australia and globally into our Boarding community.
For our younger students, Scots has a dedicated Boarding House for Years 5, 6 and 7 boys that offers a specialised and age-appropriate program in a smaller, family orientated environment.
This provides an excellent grounding for the social, organisational and academic requirements of Boarding in the Middle and Senior School campuses, and is a great segway into the culture of Scots and the demands of a busy school.
Many of the boys have vastly differing primary school experiences. Boarding in Years 5 and 6 allows for bespoke Academic and Pastoral Care support, providing teachers with an opportunity to begin closing any gaps that may be present, or in some cases, extending a boy’s current abilities further.
A strong Pastoral Care Program provides the framework and structure to ensure every boy is given the opportunity to develop strengths, build resilience, cultivate beliefs and fulfil his potential.
The wellbeing of Scots Boarders is the College’s priority. Students are provided with the tools, education and support to build independence for a balanced lifestyle. This includes regular exercise, substantial meals designed by nutritionists and healthy sleep routines to reduce stress, anxiety and homesickness.
The College’s Health Clinic provides holistic care and advice to the Boarding community, emergency care and first aid to all students. A team of three registered nurses ensures students are fully cared for.
The Counselling and Learning Enrichment teams provide support to students with a team of qualified psychologists available around the clock to ensure the emotional wellbeing of the Boarders. The Counselling staff work hand in hand with the Learning Enrichment team to ensure students feel confident in their learning.
The continuity of care and education that boarding offers is invaluable in providing a stable platform for a child’s development. Boarding teaches children to take responsibility for themselves, organise their time, and provides a structured study environment in which they can access experienced teachers, tutors and peer support.
