Dedication and commitment are only a few words that describe The Scots College Year 8 student Ken Noonan. Recently awarded an Associate Diploma of Music Performance by the Australian Music Examination Board, passing his exam with a distinction, the award represents an accolade well beyond his years.

Ken’s instrument of choice is the Violin, which he practices vehemently, earning him the notable award. A rare achievement for such a young student, the Diploma is awarded to outstanding candidates in the field of musical performance and music theory. Preparation is key to earning this award, which requires demonstrating the correct stylistic interpretation of the chosen instrument. A huge undertaking for anyone, let alone a 14 year old, the exams are a 40 minute process.

“To have put in a concerted effort in learning the repertoire and rehearsing with an accompanist in readiness for an exam is a huge undertaking,” says Mr Paul Vickers, Director of Music at The Scots College. Ken ensured that he was prepared across many other elements including general knowledge, scales, technical work and orchestral excerpts.

Ken has not only been busy in practice – he has entered recitals, eisteddfods and performed in master classes as a way of furthering his performance and skill.

“Occasionally, a boy will stand up and say he is willing to do more, he crams a year’s worth of learning into six months. Ken truly is a fine Scots boy and a fine young musician”, says Mr Vickers.

“A boy’s willingness to learn is instrumental to his success. At The Scots College, we challenge our students to accept excellence as a benchmark for all that they do”, remarked Dr Ian Lambert, Principal of The Scots College. “Ken has embraced this challenge with a spirit of willingness and determination, and we are very proud of this remarkable achievement.”
